Why request an in-class Workshop?
The Writing Center offers in-class workshops on various writing topics.
Why? Writing center and student success research suggests students often respond better to writing help when it is integrated into their classroom experience, and students are more likely to seek out individual support voluntarily after working with a tutor in class. Plus, many NSC students can't make it to campus other than during their scheduled classes, and we want them to write effectively, too.
Who? The peer Writing Specialists, with guidance from the Writing Center Director, developed a repertoire of workshops; we're looking to expand that repertoire, so if you have a special request, please let us know!
How? Submit the form below to request a workshop for your class. Please indicate in the comments box if your class is online, and if so, if it is entirely asynchronous or if you have scheduled meetings.

Workshop Topics:
Responding to Prompt/Brainstorming: Ideal for the day you give a new assignment. A Writing Specialist will present strategies for reading and interpreting a prompt, guide students to identify required elements of the assignment, and help them develop strategies for successful planning. Alternatively, a Writing Specialist can support small group brainstorming on a project, asking fruitful questions and troubleshooting. Incorporating Sources Effectively: From identifying reliable sources to effective paraphrasing to proper introduction and citing of sources in text. A Writing Specialist will provide strategies for students to connect what others have said to their essays, with attention to fair representation of others' ideas, clarity about their own contributions, and how to avoid unintentional plagiarism. Productive Peer Review An adaptable workshop that can either prepare your students for more productive peer review sessions in the future or provide a Writing Specialist on a peer review day to support constructive reviewing (and help out with any underdeveloped drafts). The workshop emphasizes reading generously, asking the writer questions about their intended meaning, and considering higher order concerns (argument, thesis, development) as well as lower order concerns (typos, grammar, format). The workshop also includes a section on ways to interpret others' feedback, encouraging thoughtful revision. Format, Citation, and Style Conventions This workshop helps students develop the awareness and skills needed to know what elements of their writing are governed by format, citation, and style conventions; how to find resources necessary to ensure their writing follows those conventions; how much time and effort it takes to do so; and what resources are available to help. |
